OFFERING SUZUKI MUSIC EARLY CHILDHOOD and CELLO TRAINING

What is the Suzuki Method?
The younger they start, the better.

  • Shinichi Suzuki developed the method in the 1940’s in Japan when he founded the Talent Education school.
  • The method is also known as the Mother Tongue method as Suzuki developed it to model the way children learn their mother tongue, through listening, repetition and imitation.
  • Suzuki believed that you are not born with talent, instead it is learned and it is advantageous to start the process at a young age.
  • The method has a set repertoire that is set up in a series of books. A CD goes along with the books with professionals playing the repertoire. The child learns the pieces by listening to the CD’s and working out the pieces on their instruments by ear.
  • Once the child has developed their technique with the instrument, then reading is introduced.
  • Another key element of the Suzuki method is the parent involvement. As when a child learns to talk, parents are involved in the musical learning of their child. They attend lessons with the child and serve as "home teachers" during the week. One parent often learns to play before the child, so that s/he understands what the child is expected to do. Parents work with the teacher to create an enjoyable learning environment.

What is my Background and Training?
Teacher and StudentI have a bachelor degree from the University of Waterloo, and am training in all levels of Suzuki. I am a member of the Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA), Suzuki Association of Ontario (SAO), and I am affiliated with the Burlington Suzuki Association. I have my own private studio in the west Oakville area. I have played cello and piano for over 30 years completing Royal Conservatory exams, including receiving the silver medal award for the top mark in Ontario on my grade 8 cello exam. I have enjoyed playing in a number of orchestras and ensembles including the Scarborough Philharmonic, The West Coast Symphony in Vancouver and currently play with the Mississauga Symphony. I was introduced to the Suzuki method when my first daughter started on the cello at age 4. I am a mother of 4 and a Suzuki parent.
